While ranging from light to dark blue hues, kyanite is unique because the gem often forms its color in the center of the stone and tends to be colorless at the edges. With a Mohs’ Hardness of 7 in general but only about 4.5 along its axes, plus a marked cleavage that parallels the prism face, kyanite is a challenge to cut.

Kyanite exhibits a pleochroism in three directions consisting of violet-blue, colorless and cobalt blue. The main sources for gem quality kyanite include Burma (Myanmar), Brazil, Kenya, Austria, Switzerland, Zimbabwe, and the United States.

Kyanite has a similar chemical composition to andalusite and fibrolite but it has a different crystal structure. It exhibits a range of colors including blue to colorless, blue-green and brown. On Mohs’ scale of Hardness, kyanite ranks about 4.5 along its axes but a tougher 7 in general. It has a vitreous luster, and primary sources includes Burma (Myanmar), Brazil, Kenya, Austria, Switzerland, Zimbabwe, and the United States. Kyanite exhibits a range of colors including blue to colorless, blue-green and brown.
